Adult Learning Center

Adult Basic Education (ABE) is a group of individualized programs designed to help adult learners complete a high school diploma, pass the GED, review for college entrance, and improve reading, writing, and math skills. Diploma students meet the same eligibility requirements as high school diploma graduates. You must be 17 years of age or older and no longer in a traditional high school program.

• Work one-on-one with the teachers
• Study independently
• Check in with the teachers weekly
• Diploma students will work on their remaining credits

To take the GED tests, you must be 18 years old or meet specific conditions for an age waiver. 

English Learner (EL)

English Learner (EL) is a program for adults seeking to improve their English language communication skills. Students work together in classroom settings. English classes are offered at many different levels. The curriculum focuses on helping learners successfully navigate systems of public schools, city, county and state governments, colleges and work culture.

EL Diploma

An EL Diploma program is built into the upper levels of our EL program. Once students achieve a reading level appropriate for studying high school topics, they can join these classes. It is a 40-credit diploma and subjects include English, Math, Science and Social Studies. Students will gain the academic skills to complete a high school diploma, prepare for college or post-secondary training and the world of work.

This program is designed to help learners who have not passed one or more credits needed to graduate. Dual enrollment is an option for any student, who maintains full-time enrollment at their high school. Students must be referred to the Dual Enrollment Program by their high school counselor.

Apprentice Ready+ is a hands-on training program designed to prepare you for careers in building trades and other apprenticeship opportunities at NO COST. This training is provided for free for participants to reduce barriers to skilled employment opportunities. We offer: 

• Diploma Program (8 Months): In partnership with the Roseville Adult Learning Center, this is a competency-based adult diploma option for those who do not yet have a high school diploma. The class is especially designed for people who are learning English as an adult.
   
• Short-Term Training (8-week trainings): Available in summer and winter for individuals who have already earned a high school diploma.

Digital Literacy

This is an introductory course that covers a wide range of basic computer and software information! Students will earn NorthStar certificates as they pass the tests.

Topics include basic computer skills, internet basics, email, Windows 10, social media, information literacy, career search skills, your digital footprint, distance learning, and telehealth.

IT Career Pathway

This is an advanced class and students should be comfortable with using computers. In this class, we cover Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google apps.

Students will earn their Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certificates from Microsoft when they pass the test. Students can also earn a certificate from Google! These certifications look great on resumes when applying for jobs.

At the Roseville Adult Learning Center, we work with English Learners (EL) with a variety of proficiency levels. We are looking for patient, flexible, self-motived adults who are willing to commit time and energy to our EL team to help students reach their goals.

Volunteer Opportunities

• EL Tutor: Work on English language skills with an adult English Learner in a one-on-one setting or in the classroom.
• EL Classroom Assistant: Assist instructors in the classroom or teach an advanced group of learners under the supervision of a mentor teacher or advisor. Subjects and learner levels vary and include the following areas: math, writing, computer skills, citizenship, reading, and conversation. Individualized, small group, or large group instruction.
• Digital Education Lab Support Volunteer: Assist students in computer-based learning. Skill sets include: using a mouse, keyboarding, e-mail, Windows, internet browsing, and Microsoft Office... plus a lot of patience!

Qualified Volunteers

Volunteers need to be able to work with adults with limited English proficiency and willing to commit to a regular schedule. Dependable and prompt, interested in others, able to relate to learners with a wide range of abilities. Respectful of confidentiality, literate in English, flexible, friendly, patient, optimistic. Ability to appreciate, validate, and affirm people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds is essential.

Schedule

A commitment is required: two hours per week for six months (or one semester). Opportunities are available Monday - Friday.

Times:

• Monday through Friday: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
• Monday through Thursday: 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

If you can't commit to a regular, weekly schedule, there are often one-time and short-term volunteer opportunities available. Some examples may include: coaching a student in learning sewing with a sewing machine, handwork, or tending to our community garden. Contact us for more information.
