What is Early Childhood Screening?
Early Childhood screenings is a quick way to check and see how your child is growing, developing, and learning. During the screening, your child will complete a variety of activities that show their communication, cognitive, and motor skills. The screening also checks your child's vision, hearing, height, and weight.
Why Should I Have My Child Screened?
Minnesota state law requires Early Childhood Screening for all children ages 3–5 before they start preschool or kindergarten. This free screening connects families with helpful resources, early learning programs, and community supports if needed. Early screening means early support — giving your child the best start for school and beyond!
Screen at Age 3!
Though screening can be done anytime between ages 3 and 5, screening is recommended at age 3. Screening at age 3 allows families to identify and address any developmental, health, hearing, or vision concerns early, when support and intervention can make the greatest impact. Completing the screening at this age also provides plenty of time to connect with resources and ensure children are fully prepared for preschool and kindergarten. Each age group has its own scoring system, so waiting until your child is older won’t change the results — but screening sooner can open doors to extra support if it’s needed.
